On November 30, 2019, I went to visit Phillips State Prison in Gwinnett County. I wanted to learn more about our Criminal Justice System. Initially, I was told that I could not go inside because of staffing issues but I insisted on seeing the facility after all it is paid for by tax-dollars.
Finally, I was escorted by the Deputy Director and the Warden into Phillips State Prison. This prison houses 846 inmates (all men and some with mental health issues). Overall the facilities are clean and they offer educational opportunities (high school classes, mentorship, Toastmaster, faith & Character building). Vocational classes (like carpentry, welding etc.), and re-entry programs are offered as well.
Medical services to inmates is available 24 hours a day.
I spoke with several visiting family members who said their incarcerated family members had been in other facilities and this was a big improvement over the others. All utilities were working (heating water etc.).
My escorts were very personable and I appreciated being given this tour
